Happy New Year everyone. I hope 2011 is a happy, fun filled year of design and new discoveries for you all.

I unofficially signed off from blogging a while back, but just want to say how much I enjoyed blogging about Ottawa's great artists, shops, and design. Our city has so much to offer, and I encourage you to visit some of the stores and artists I've profiled and all the other great ones out there, too.

While more blogging isn't on the radar right now for me -- other than reading everyone's great posts -- I'm still taking on new clients and helping them with their decorating projects. If you live in Ottawa and need help with colour selection, space planning, window treatments, furniture/accessory placement, and room design, please get in touch with me. I'd love to help you out.

The Great Ottawa Senators Decorating Adventure: Part 4

Well, it's Sunday, and as promised, here are final images of the Great Sens room! We still need a couple of posters and a small accent pillow, but the window treatment is up, matching shams are on the bed, funky lighting is installed, logos are on the walls, a fan looking like it has miniature hockey nets around the bulbs is up, and we have storage. I took the shots tonight, and probably should have waited until the morning, but I really wanted to post them up today so you could sneak a peak! Have a great week everyone!

Designing Woman

The Great Ottawa Senators room isn't quite finished (next week, I promise), so I'm interrupting coverage to bring you Designing Woman: Industrial Designer extraordinaire.

Here in Ottawa, we're really fortunate to have Carleton University where Industrial Design is a key program. And, fabulously, there are a lot of amazing young women enrolled.

Bonnie Van Tassel is one of these women. She has just completed her fourth year at Carleton, and is obviously driven, creative, and very, very talented.

Bonnie Van Tassel ...

Wazo Lounge Chair

This piece was designed for the Asahikawa International Furniture Design Competition. The challenge was to design an elegant piece of furniture that celebrates wood as a material and shows its beauty. From the beginning, Bonnie envisioned a flow of grain and texture. She worked in quarter scale (amazing but true!) to create a comfortable and beautiful lounge chair. The end product is a flexed fan of mahogany, cherry, walnut and maple, finished with olive oil and brass hardware.

Portable Seating: Axis

This piece was designed with mobility and portability in mind. The challenge was to design an ultra-portable seat which would be able to withstand any grown adult sitting on it, while being compact enough to be easily taken on a bus or carried around. The seat is made of birch russian plywood, ultra-suede fabric and high-density polyurethane padding, and weighs only six pounds.

Happy Sunday. I hope everyone had a great weekend!
Work on the Great Ottawa Senators Decorating Adventure slowed a bit this week, but here are a couple of shots showing how amazing everything looks with the black chair rail up. The wall colours just pop right out now! Especially the amazing red. I've moved the bed towards the window to gain some floor space, started outfitting the bed (note black coverlet and ever useful Hudson's Bay blanket!), and added an Ottawa Senators floor mat. Obviously, there's still lots to come including more bedding, a fun window treatment, lighting, storage, and other accessories, so do stay tuned. Enjoy your week! The Great Ottawa Senators Decorating Adventure: Part 2

Hi everyone. The Ottawa Senators are in a bit of trouble right now, but our room transformation is coming along fabulously! Here are some images of what's been done so far thanks to my extremely talented painting husband. The walls are finished now, and we are just about ready to add on a chair rail, which was very precisely measured, cut, and painted black. Again, thanks to talented husband.

BTW, we used a new Benjamin Moore paint line called "Aura". While it's quite expensive, it goes on easily with great coverage, and is environmentally friendly, too. Normally, red requires many coats to get the right intensity, especially if the paint is not high quality. But, using a tinted primer as our first coat, we only needed one coat of the red because the quality of "Aura" is so high.

The Great Ottawa Senators Decorating Adventure: Part 1

Well, I think spring is finally here and that means painting time! I've been dreaming of redoing my son's bedroom the whole winter, and now the warmer weather is here, it's time to get started!

Here's a picture of his bedroom now. It's actually quite cheery, and it's worked well for us because I kept the wall colour that was there before he was born, and just added stuff to brighten the room until it was redecorated for him. But, now he's really a little boy, and it's time for a fabulous change reflecting his personality and the things he loves.

So, with no further ado, here are the colours I've chosen for him, and some marvellously complementary fabric for the roman shade and accent pillows. Yes, it is most definitely bright, and, yes, I can hear my college instructors saying, "Jen, red does not go in a bedroom." But, what's a girl to do when your son is a hockey fanatic and lives and breathes for the Ottawa Senators ... !! The answer's pretty simple actually, and we're all having a lot of fun pulling it together. Delfina Falcao

Ottawa artist Delfina Falcao is one busy and extremely talented lady -- when she's not creating gorgeous glass murals, she's forming lovely glass lampshades and one of a kind area rugs. Here's a photo of Delfina in her studio and some examples of her outstanding work. I especially love the glass mural hanging in the bathroom. Cheesecake extraordinaire

Well, luckily my Easter cheesecake was a resounding success, and it wasn't hard either! So, as promised, here's the recipe for the next time you're craving a fabulous finish to a fabulous meal. I pulled this recipe a few years ago from a Gourmet magazine spread called In Pursuit of Cheesecakes, where Gourmet says it is their absolute favourite in the creamy category. And, wow, is this ever true. Sorry I don't have a photo -- I kind of missed the boat on that one, and it was eaten way too fast! -- but it really is a little taste of heaven. Hope you enjoy!

Three Cities of Spain Cheesecake (from Gourmet Magazine, November 1999)

1 graham crumb crust
3 8-oz packages cream cheese softened
4 large eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 cup sugar

For topping
16 oz sour cream
1 tablespoon sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla

** I made this into a lemon cheesecake, so I also added 2 tablespoons of lemon juice, and 1 teaspoon of lemon zest to the filling, and 1 tablespoon of lemon juice to the topping. I suggest, though, that you taste test, just to make sure you have the right amount of lemon/sugar that you like.

Prepare crumb crust. Stir together 1.5 cups finely ground graham crackers, 5 tablespoons unsalted butter (melted), 1/3 cup sugar, and 1/8 teaspoon salt. I also added 1 teaspoon of grated lemon rind. Press onto bottom and 1 inch up side of a buttered 24-centimeter springform pan. Fill right away or chill up to 2 hours.

Beat cream cheese with an electric mixer until fluffy and add eggs, 1 at a time, then vanilla and sugar, beating on low speed until each ingredient is incorporated and scraping down bowl between additions.

Put springform pan with crust in a shallow baking pan. Pour filling into crust and bake in baking pan (to catch drips)in middle of oven 45 minutes, or until cake is set 3 inches from edge but centre is still slightly wobbly when pan is gently shaken. Let stand in baking pan on a rack 5 minutes. Leave oven on.

Make topping:

Stir together sour cream, sugar, and vanilla. Drop spoonfulls of topping around edge of cake and spread gently over centre, smoothing evenly. Bake cake with topping 10 minutes.

Run a knife around top edge of cake to loosen and cool completely in springform pan on rack. (Cake will continue to set as it cools.) Chill cake, loosely covered, at least 6 hours. Remove side from pan and transfer cake to a plate. Bring to room temperature before serving.

Everyday miracles

Whew! What a week! Work was busy, and on top of it, my back decided to give me a hard time. Have you ever had one of those stiff necks that just won't go away no matter how many ways you've tried to fix it? Well, that's been me -- the person ahead of you in the hallway who has to move their ENTIRE body when they want to look at you behind them. Yep, one of those weeks ...

Anyways, I want to share something a bit different with you today. It's not exclusive, it's not even related to design, but it is related to life. Here goes ...

Last weekend, we were lucky to visit my sister and her husband at their 150-year old home just north of Kingston in Eastern Ontario. We'd been planning this visit for weeks, but for one reason or another -- hockey practices, colds, flus, you name it -- we just had to keep putting it off. Finally, we got around to it, and we had a fabulous day -- celebrating birthdays, singing and playing guitar, walking along soggy, but beautiful roads, and admiring all the work and love which my sister and her husband are putting into fixing up their home.

The highlight of the day, though, was definitely our marshmallow roast in the backyard. You see, their house is no ordinary house -- it was built in 1862 for the manager of a mill, and for this mill to work, well you had to have water -- lots of it, running fast ....

So, as you can imagine, their backyard is pretty amazing, and their house is, too. Everywhere you go, you hear the sound of running water, and everywhere you look, you see running water, or something else beautiful and wild. No cars, no traffic, no fabric swatches and paint samples to better, or perhaps, confuse the situation -- just nature designing itself in its own miraculous way. And, what a miracle it is indeed ...

Have a wonderful weekend, everyone, and if you're celebrating Easter, Happy Easter to you, too. We're spending Easter with my parents, and I'm cooking up a storm getting ready for their visit. View from my sister's house and backyard. In summer, you can swim in the pond near the base of the rapids. And, they have a huge vegetable and herb garden beside the house. I'm truly jealous about this!

Marshmallowing. The kids had a blast in front of the campfire. That's my sister's house being renovated in the background. The dilapidated brown building to the right is the old mill. I've heard someone just bought it, and I'm looking forward to seeing how they fix it up.

Apparently, roasted marshmallows are one thing, but even better are roasted marshmallow sandwiches with chocolate chips!! Mmm ... mmm ... good.

Greening up accessories

In a world where green design is king, Vancouver's Ouno Design is making waves. Ouno (pronounced OO-no) makes one-of-a-kind decor accessories using mostly vintage materials like antique and modern Japanese cottons and linens, mod-1960s and 1970s European graphic prints, midcentury-modern woven textiles, and sheepskin and fur reclaimed from vintage coats. Here are some images of Ouno's fabulous designs, including marvellous pillows made from vintage fabrics and bedspreads made from vintage scarves. Do you see the beaver in the first image? Well, he's a vintage scarf from the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal! I'd love to have that bedspread, and wouldn't it look absolutely terrific in an open-concept, warehouse loft?

Unique hotels: Part 3

Cranes are huge machines that lift things, right? They're big and industrial, best suited to constuction sites and loading docks. But, imagine a crane where you actually spend the night, high above the water, looking over a harbour, and a fabulous lighthouse! Well, that's exactly what's possible at the Harlingen Harbour Crane in Harlingen, the Netherlands.

In it's previous life, the Harlingen Harbour Crane was used to unload timber freight from Russia and Scandinavia. Today, there's room for you and one other, to spend the night in the crane's beautifully appointed main room and cabin - complete with lovely bed, Eames Chairs, mini bar, a large roof patio, and huge panoramic views through wall and ceiling windows. And, guess what! You can even operate the crane! Unique Hotels: Part 2

Last week I brought you the Kirkenes Snowhotel -- a marvellous hotel built of snow and ice in Norwegian Lapland. This week, we're heading off to Brazil, to dream over the Ariau Amazon Towers, a uniquely fabulous resort located 35 miles from Manuas, Brazil . The Ariau is a hotel where you can truly have a room with a view, and then some! Built among the Amazon treetops, each of the Ariau's towers are joined together by four miles of wooden catwalks. Monkeys, parrots, macaws, and butterflies are everywhere, and I imagine the noise is tremendous! There is a large, circular dining room of polished tropical woods, serving amazing tropical fruits, warm Brazilian pastries, breads, cheeses, and strong Brazilian coffee for breakfast, and equally delicious fare for lunch and dinner. And, the rooms, where you wake up every morning, high among the trees, with beautiful panoramic views, and lovely tropical sounds -- well, they are to die for! Andrew King: Part 2

There is good news for Ottawa art fans this cold, February night! Ottawa artist, Andrew King has just launched his first solo art exhibit at the Terence Robert Gallery, 531 Sussex Drive, in Ottawa. Here are some examples of his new works -- as quirky, delightful, and animated as ever! Enjoy, and do pop by if you can. The exhibition runs until March 5th.

Unique hotels: Part 1

Apparently not all hotels are made of wood and other prefabricated materials -- some are made of ice and snow! In Norwegian Lapland -- two hours north of Oslo by air -- the fabulous Kirkenes Snowhotel features 21 rooms made of snow and ice. Guests are treated to real beds in each suite, surrounded by gorgeous snow sculptures; very warm, Artic designed sleeping bags; and lovely warm lighting to offset the colder room temperatures. When it's time for dinner, meals are served in an adjoining wooden structure, with local foods including fresh salmon, whitefish, and cloudberries. And, if you are in need of warming up, there is a Scandinavian sauna by a nearby lake, just a short walk from your suite. Here are some gorgeous images of the Snowhotel suites to brighten your day. Goodbye plain walls: Hello Moffat Bailie

When I think of extraordinary walls and ceilings, I think immediately of Moffat Bailie Walls - a fabulous Ottawa-based company owned by Sarah Moffat. I first met Sarah two years ago at an event where she and Susan Bailie were showcasing Moffat Bailie's brilliant work. Their hardcopy portfolio was outstanding -- overflowing with beautiful images incorporating glazing and Venetian plastering techniques, as well as gold and metallic leafing --a technique where microthin metal is applied to a surface, whether it's a wall, ceiling, pillar, etc. Quite frankly, walls have never been the same to me since, because I know there's always more that can be done -- especially under Sarah and Susan's skilled hands. Here are a few examples of Moffat Bailie's fabulous work. I guarantee after seeing them, you'll never look at walls, ceilings, or pillars in quite the same way.

The Burakkii Collection: Sara Seggie

You sit back luxuriously on your Roche-Bobois sofa, outfitted in the most neutral of fabrics, and glance contentedly at your surroundings, relishing the sense of peace and modern elegance. Finally, your eye comes to rest on this magnificent work of art ...

Mosaic Tile

If you're thinking of renovating a bathroom, you might want to incorporate some mosaic tile into your design. Here are some absolutely fabulous examples, courtesy of the Ann Sack's Web site. I absolutely love the first, but my favourite is most definitely the second with the floral floor tile. Just like wallpaper, mosaic tile makes a huge statement. And, importantly, it is perfect in both smaller and larger spaces. So, even if it's not feasible to use alot, incorporating some provides quite the dramatic touch.

I have a six year old and a three year old (read: bedlam at dinner), so I don't get many chances to entertain with gorgeous dishes. But, if I did, (and a girl can dream, right!), I'd definitely be including Robert Moeller's sushi dishes and platters in my repertoire. Lucky for me, Robert lives just north of Ottawa, in the village of Wakefield. But, for anyone living outside the area who loves his glasswork as much as I do, Robert ships outside Canada, too. So, lucky everyone, I guess! Happy viewing!

Rice Denmark

It's snowing again tonight. Cold, wet flakes which probably will be freezing rain by tomorrow morning. Yippee!! I need a holiday, but can't take one. I need sun, but it's gone on holiday, too! So, I'm turning to Rice for my colour fix and beautiful interior photos, to boot. Rice is popping up on a few great design blogs lately -- notably Hidden in France and decor8, but I feel compelled to get in on the action, too. I just love all the colour against white and the cheerfullness of Rice products and images. Here are a few photos from the Rice website to take your mind away from dreary winter (if that's the season you're in). BTW, all Rice products are designed and developed in Denmark, and are produced in the third world with respect for people, so it's hard to go wrong here! Happy colour!

The Pod Hotel - New York City

Designing small spaces can often be challenging. Where to put the bed? Where to put the closet? And what about the television!? ... The Pod Hotel in New York City takes small and makes it work really well. It's all about maximum use of space, in a hip, funky, tech atmosphere -- perfect for the stylish and economical traveller. And, best of all, it's located in the heart of NYC's Midtown East neighbourhood. Check it out! I already know where I'll be staying next time I'm in NYC! Barb at May December Home tagged me the other day -- so that means she's asked me to share seven random things about myself, and then tag seven other lucky blogging friends to do the same. The random things about myself shouldn't be an issue -- because as I said to Barb, I'm very good at random! Anyways, here are my seven, followed by the seven I tag!

1) I was born in Montreal and grew up in Burlington, Ontario -- which for those of you who don't know, is just outside of Toronto.

2) I love dancing, and am busily learning how to mambo and salsa these days!

3) I love LOTS of colour, pattern, and funky lighting!

4) I was a bouncer when I was at university. Think they liked putting the small blonde beside the big, bruising football players. Something about calming the situation down! Thank god I never got swiped!

5) I lived for a year in Australia and New Zealand, which was fabulous.

6) I'm married with two small children: a boy and a girl, who I love to bits and keep me very busy.

7) And, I love blogging, because it's terrific meeting people from all around the world, who share my passion for interior decorating, design, and art.

As many of you know, I love lighting -- almost as much as I love unique furniture. So, when I walked into Arevco Lighting this weekend, I was in seventh heaven! Check out these fabulous fixtures currently on display. I could seriously handle any one of them in my home -- especially the first, if only I had the room! Secret passageways and hidden rooms

Imagine standing by a bookcase, and all of a sudden, it mysteriously opens. Or, leaning against a staircase, which suddenly lifts up, revealing a hidden room. These are the types of creations Steven Humble of Creative Home Engineering specializes in - fully automated, Hollywood style secret passages that you'd never know were there -- unless someone told you or you stumbled on them by accident.

When I asked Steven why he started Creative Home Engineering, he told me he's always been fascinated with secret passages and planned to have some in his own home. But, after he became a mechanical engineer, and actually started looking for someone to build some, he found there were really no companies around with the right experise. So, using his engineering and robotics background, he started a business, filling this little niche for others like himself around the world.

Well, I'm certainly glad he has, because this kind of stuff is just plain fun! Think of the possibilities if you were having your home custom built and wanted something a bit different. Forget ordinary custom cabinets; I say, build something with mystery and panache!

Karen Goetzinger

I'm back with Day 2 of Ottawa Artist Week, and so pleased to introduce Karen Goetzinger, a mixed media textile artist who is based here in Ottawa. I certainly don't know much about textile art -- and suspect I am not alone. But, when I first saw Karen's work last week, I thought, wow, how beautiful. I love the colours and texture, and am so impressed that much is stitched by hand. Just imagine one larger work displayed on a wall, or four arranged together. Wouldn't they make a lovely, stunning focal point -- especially if shown against low, contemporary furniture? Unfortunately, I can't show you more images right now because I'm fighting with technology and it's getting late! Last night, I looked at my calendar and thought -- yikes, it's mid-January and we don't have any major holidays coming up soon. How about I proclaim this Ottawa Artist Week, just for the fun of it? Floor stencilling

Happy New Year everyone! I hope you all had lovely holidays, and are only slowly getting back into the regular swing of things. I'm excited to be back blogging and reading everyone's inspirational ideas, and am so looking forward to a year of great design and new projects.

I'm starting off 2008 with something I've never tried before, but just love how it adds texture to a room and acts as a wonderful design accent -- floor stencilling. Floor stencilling was very popular between 1740-1840, and can still be seen today in affluent American homes built during this period. Then, as now, stencilling was used to simulate woven carpet, floorcloths, tiling, and parquet floors, at considerably lesser expense than the real thing. And, most were painted using one colour -- often black on pumpkin pine. Again, to cut down on costs.

Today, there is a growing interest in creatively accenting wood floors with paints, stains and tints, inside stencilled designs. Companies like MB Historic Decor, based in Vermont, http://www.mbhistoricdecor.com/ and Gracewood Design, in Portland, Oregon, http://www.gracewooddesign.com/ specialize in creating original and authentic stencils used in both interior and exterior designs. Though now, patterns usually incorporate one, two, or three colours.

All you have to do (it sounds so easy doesn't it?) is prepare your floor by first washing, scraping and sanding away all the old paint and varnish, then, priming it with wood primer so the paint or stain will adhere. Then, you trace your stencil onto the floor, and colour it in with cold water fabric dye that adheres well, remembering to use an almost dry brush. Once this is all done, you protect your design with floor finish.

Here are a few examples of floor stencilling I've pulled from Flickr and other sites. As you'll see, it's beautiful in smaller rooms as a stark accent, down otherwise uninteresting hallways, on stairways, as faux carpetting, and even around the pool on acid washed concrete. If anyone has taken on a project like this, and would like to share, please do, and I'll post it up so everyone can see. Moo-Cow Adventure (3)

Well, this is it. The final installment of the great moo-cow adventure. My apoligies over how long it's been since my last installment on November 1st. And, for those just joining in, this is the story of transforming a little girl's bedroom from her baby room to her big girl room.

Just to make it easier, because I know we're all in pre-holiday countdown mode!, here's a recap from beginning to fabulous conclusion.

You'll remember this is how the room started out looking ...

And, then, I found this terrific fabric with cows on it, and decided to base the whole room around it ...

Which led to the room being painted in these fabulous P&L colours. And, finding a terrific accent cushion, rug, and fabric to be used in a roman shade.

Which led to the grande finale, with chest of drawers and night table painted orange, and wall candy art on the walls to punch things up a bit and introduce a few new colours. I'm absolutely thrilled with the transformation -- the room feels bigger, vibrant and more alive. And, the little girl -- well, she's ecstatic -- especially with the "bubbles" on her walls!

The Spirit of Christmas

Each year, the May Court Club of Ottawa -- an organization dedicated to community service and fundraising for those in need --holds a raffle of Christmas trees and other treasures created by members or donated by sponsors. All proceeds go towards local organizations. Here are a few photos of this year's trees and treasures (unfortunately, there was just way too much light and I'm no photo expert!, but you do get the idea). My favourite is definitely the first tree by Christine Beelen, "All Wound up for Christmas", which is absolutely perfect for a more contemporary interior. Each of the ornaments is hand-made and Christine told me she started making them in the summer -- probably spending close to 150 hours making her creation! I also really love "Seaside Christmas" created by the Crossland Family and Sleepy Hollow. It just has a really lovely feel to it, and makes me feel like I'm by the ocean. Check out the way the branches are wound in material to make them look like palm trees! If you live in Ottawa, there's still a chance to head on down to the Rideau Centre to check them out and buy a ticket or two -- they're on display until Saturday. Otherwise, here they are for inspiration as we decorate our homes. Have a great weekend everyone!

For the love of furniture

I love furniture. In fact, the first design course I took was on the history of furniture! People told me I was crazy, but I didn't listen to them. I just loved it, couldn't get enough of it, and today I'm the same way. So, tonight I thought I'd break free from all my Christmas preparations (ahhh ... I feel re-energized already!), and profile Glen Foster, a furniture-maker who lives in Wakefield, Quebec, just outside of Ottawa. Glen started his career in fish physiology of all things, and spent a number of years working as a research associate in a university. But, furniture making was his passion, and today he designs and crafts it full-time. Here are a few photos of his work which has been sold at stores including Alteriors here in Ottawa. I especially like the second and third images which are of flitch-top tables, where a naturally edged piece of wood seems to float above the base. Holiday greenery

We're hosting a Christmas open house in a couple of weeks, and I'm starting to think about decorating our house for the big day. Here are a few creative ideas I picked up from Virginia Vince at Ottawa's Bloomfield's Flowers.

Bring in lots of greenery, berries and flowers, she suggests. Nothing makes a home feel more festive than fresh floral arrangements and scented pine and cedar boughs on a cold, crisp night. Or, for a beautiful centerpiece, fill a bowl with green pears, ornaments, and sprigs of pine and cedar. Or, take a clear glass vase, and pack it with holly and distilled water – magnifying the berries and making the colours clear and vibrant through the glass.

And, here's a neat idea. Apparently, loaf pans also come in handy when making centerpieces! Fill one up with water, sprigs of holly with red berries, and put it in the freezer. Once the pan is set, remove the ice block and place it on a tray covered with greenery and pine cones. A couple of candles placed close – but not too close to the ice - will add some sparkle.

There, this all sounds pretty easy. I think I'm all set -- or closer to it, anyways! If you have ideas to share, please send them my way!

Advent candles

Tomorrow is December 1st - the first day of Advent. And, for those like me, who grew up in a quasi-Scandinavian family (one side Danish, the other side Irish), this means lighting the Advent candle and starting our countdown to Christmas. Here's a photo of some terrific Advent candles that would make a fun centrepiece for the kitchen table - or anywhere else, for that matter. My kids, husband, and I will be lighting ours tomorrow night -along with hot chocolate and cookies, of course! So, if you haven't got your's yet, there's still time to pick one up tomorrow, and start a new tradition, too. Have a lovely weekend, everyone!

Alanna Baird

We're all trying to do our bit for the environment, but Ottawa artist Alanna Baird is taking it one step further -- taking old, tin can lids or recycled scrap copper -- and making them into the most beautiful fish sculptures imaginable. All of the tin comes from the community, and Alanna often finds little packages of lids tied to her doorknob, cleaned and left there by people she doesn't know, ready to be transformed into perfect fish scales. More recently, Alanna has started using scrap copper in her sculptures, which means they can be used and left outside. Here are a few photos of Alanna's remarkable fish --the first two are made from recycled tin lids; the last is made from recyled scrap copper. Soul Matters

The other day I posted on Northern Art Glass and the beautiful work they do. Here is some work they're doing right now -- putting in new stained glass windows in the southwest tower of the East Block, on Canada's Parliament Hill. The work involves installing large windows on all four sides of the tower and on two levels. No small feat! Here are some shots, both inside and out. The view's incredible, isn't it? And, don't you think the tower looks like it has a face? Intentional or not -- who knows! It was a long time ago, but maybe someone was having some fun and seeing who'd notice! ...

Northern Art Glass

I live in an older home -- built in the mid-1960s -- when beautiful front doors and large front porches were'nt as common as they are now. Consequently, we're stuck at the moment with a very dark, front entranceway, and a huge slab of a front door with no window in it. Ughh! But not for long--hopefully! There is a solution to leaving the front door open all the time to let in light through the screen door - even when it's sub-zero outside - and, it's stained glass.

I love stained glass -- it's colours, patterns, and the way it makes colour dance around in the sunlight. So, a stained glass front door - for me - is the perfect solution. And, with skilled artisans in the city, such as those found at Northern Art Glass, it really is possible to come up with a beautiful, unique solution.

Sara Seggie - Part II

I've posted on Sara Seggie before (October 18th) and you know how I love her mosaic work. One of Sara's creations -- a guitar with glass bonded to the surface in intricate designs -- is now on display in the front window of the Ottawa Folklore Centre on Bank Street. Here it is for you to take a look at. And, congratulations, Sara. It looks fabulous, and definitely stood out when I drove by this morning!

Frank Prendergast

Cabinetry can be purely functional or it can be an artform. In the case of third generation, Ottawa carpenter, Frank Prendergast, of Neoform Cabinetry, www.neoform.ca, it is most definitely both. Frank first got in touch with me a couple of weeks ago, and I was immediately blown away by his beautiful, creative work. Today, he sent me some photos, and I'm very happy to post them for you tonight. After just one look, I'm sure you'll feel the same way. It's not too often we see such creative use of space, and the combination of classic and innovative materials, to make such one-of-a-kind designs. Here for your viewing pleasure, with little descriptions courtesy of moi, is the marvellous work of Frank Prendergast. Enjoy and be amazed!

This one called Puzzle Wall is a real charmer -- well, anything with babies usually is. But, here, Frank has outdone himself, creating a 7' x 8' patchwork of plastic wall laminates including 12 drawers and 10 cupboards. If I had this one in my kids' rooms, I'd have no shortage of storage space, that's for sure!

This lovely work -- called Cubist Inukshuk -- was originally commissioned as a hallway table for a very small space. Frank thought, "this table doesn't have to be flat", and provided his clients with a multi-tiered Inukshuk that gave lots of places to put things. Ingenious! There'd be absolutely no excuse to lose my car keys here!

The Fulcrum -- a yellow and green cabinet -- that provides lots of storage space, without falling over -- and a real attention grabber in any room.

Another beautiful piece that incorporates steel, with more traditional materials. I LOVE the rich blue interior. A hidden little secret until you open it up!

Shuffle Cabinets -- I sometimes think the smaller the space, the more creative you get to be. Frank designed these cabinets so they can go in either a kitchen or a dining room (if you run out of room in the kitchen). This is two-tone lacquer gloss cabinetry -- my personal favourite for a kitchen.

Newbury Interiors

If you're heading down to Westboro this weekend, do check out one of Ottawa's newest interior furnishings stores, Newbury Interiors, at 427 Richmond Road. This gem of a store is an absolutely terrific newcomer to the Ottawa design scene, and I'm sure you won't be disappointed when you visit. Here are some photos of lamps I loved, plus a stunningly upholstered chair by Harden --(don't you just love the orange?) -- and a couple of accessory shots. I've also included a shot of NI's washroom -- visible to the store --because I just love the wallpaper they've chosen. This is a classy, creative store with panache. Enjoy -- and have fun shopping!

Funky Lighting

I absolutely love lighting! Nothing say funky like a unique lamp. And, if a room needs a little drama or pizzaz, injecting that perfect fixture does wonders. Suddenly, a ho-hum room becomes a show stopper! Here are a few favourites I found during a recent visit to Architectural Antiques, 356 Richmond Road, in Westboro -- home to antique and reproduction fixtures. I love them all, but my favourite is definitely the flower chandelier made of glass. Sooo beautiful when it's lit up -- this photo doesn't do it justice. And, just so you know, the first fixture is made of glass crystals, and the last two are made of shells.

Moo-Cow Adventure (2)

Well, it's been about a week since I posted my first installment of the great Moo-Cow Adventure, and since then, things have been coming along really well. I've found fabrics for the Roman shade and the back of the duvet cover -- at Fabricland, no less, and cotton, of course-- that work beautifully with the Moo-Cow fabric. I've also located a great little rug through Sears -- now on order -- and a fabulous pillow case for an accent pillow. Better yet, I've had the room painted in absolutely fantastic P & L colours and a chair rail installed, and things are looking fabulous!! Here's the photo of the room all painted -- obviously, the bed and other things are to come -- so stay tuned for my next installment.

Bhat Boy

Dragons and nuns ... Goldfish swimming around towers with huge eyes. Welcome to the marvellous, zany world of Ottawa artist, Bhat Boy -- a world where imagination and eye for detail clearly reigns supreme. Exterior Power

I know it's not winter yet, but being the good Canadian girl I am, I've started to think about how it affects our homes' exteriors. During the summer, many of us have lots of greenery around our houses, and flowers, too. There's lots of colour to nicely frame our homes and make them welcoming from the outside. But, what about in the winter when there's all that snow, and it can be so very, very grey and dreary? That's when front doors, shutters, and siding really come into play. And, actually, I don't think there's a season where it's more important to have a nice front door and siding than winter.

Here are a few shots I took of Ottawa homes just after a big snow storm a couple of years ago. It was a brilliantly sunny day, startling blue sky, and soooo cold. But, the houses in these shots look warm and welcoming, and they stand out in the snow. They haven't been taken over by the snow; they have a presence all their own, and I'd argue it's because of the colour of their front doors, siding and shutters.

We can't paint now; it's too cold and the paint would just peel off come spring. But, why not take a look at your front door, shutters, and siding and see if they could use a new colour to give them a new presence. While there's still no snow, and a bit of greenery and leaves around, think of what colour would look good in the spring, summer, and fall, and then take you into winter -- making your house pop out and stand out from the rest.

Christmas is coming

Well, ok, I know it's not even Hallowe'en yet, but it will be soon, and then, we'll all be starting to think just a little bit about Christmas, right?

But, it's Ottawa artists like Janine Smith who make shopping for Christmas easy and so much fun. Here are a few photos of her custom, hand-painted furniture and one-of-a-kind board games. Door knockers (yes, door knockers!)

I took this photo a few years ago in Florence, Italy -- and every time I look at it I think, wow, I wonder who lives behind that door??!! Today, when I pulled it out, though, I also thought, there's something missing here-- this door definitely needs a door knocker...

Actually, I think we all should have door knockers on our front doors, don't you? They're so much more interesting than bells, and they give our front doors real presence -- truly setting the stage for what's to come inside our homes. Here are a few photos I've pulled as examples.

Sara Seggie

I have a real humdigger of a cold tonight -- so, I was really happy when I opened up my email and found mosaic artist, Sara Seggie, had sent me photos of her amazing wall hangings. Sara creates all her art pieces with "intuition and passion", using machine and hand rolled glass of many colours and textures. She then cuts the glass into various shapes and sizes, arranges them, and bonds them to an MDF surface that is bonded to plywood. Once the glass is well bonded, it is grouted and polished, and all set for wall display. Here are a few of Sara's beautiful art pieces. Decorating 101

Where to position lamps can be tricky. Here are a few tips to help you out:

First off, when a lamp is on a side table next to a sofa or chair, the bottom of the lampshade should be at eye level when you're sitting down -- or 40-42" from the floor. Too high a lampshade will cause glare; too low a shade will result in too little light;
Next, when a lamp is on a bedside table, and it's used for reading, the bottom of the lampshade should be even with your shoulder when you're sitting up in bed -- or about 20" from the top of your bed;
And finally, if you're using a floor lamp for reading or for work, the bottom of the shade needs to be at eye level. If your lamp is too tall, and you're having trouble making this work, move the lamp about 10 inches behind your shoulder to reduce the glare.

I just love these retro, but oh so now, tea towels. Just one look at those perky, smiling faces and what they're saying makes me want to laugh, too. You can find them at three wild women living sublime at 1171 Bank Street in Old Ottawa South where they're apparently flying out the door as fast as they come in. No wonder ... maybe pick some up for this Thanksgiving weekend as a hostess gift or for your own kitchen!

Remembering

My grandmother passed away earlier this week and today we are remembering her. In memory of a feisty 94 year old, with a wicked sense of Irish humour, I'd like to post something which I'm sure she would love very much --- the beautiful, contemporary glass art of Tanya Lyons -- an extremely talented artist who comes from a city where my grandmother lived much of her life --- Montreal. While we're on the subject of table settings, I thought I'd steer you towards Carolyne Roehm's At Home with Carolyne Roehm, (Random House, 2001) which is one of my absolutely all-time favourite books for getting lost in and plunking down with a warm, comfy cup of tea or hot chocolate. Every time I look at it, I can just feel myself getting inspired by her collection of menus, recipes, table settings, and the most beautiful event photography you've ever seen. It's table setting time (well, almost!)

I have to say, setting a unique table is not one of my specialties -- probably because I ALWAYS seem to run out of time, and my good intentions get bounced by having to deal with a diaper here and a minor calamity there ... So, knowing that Thanksgiving's next weekend (yes, next weekend!), and a few of us will be starting to wonder about setting a beautiful table AND getting the turkey ready on time (yes, we will!), I went and saw Virigina Vince today at Bloomfields Flowers in the Glebe http://www.bloomfieldsflowers.ca/ for some simple, table setting suggestions. (BTW, I'd love to hear your table setting suggestions, and send photos, too!)

"Try a long, clear glass vase for a contemporary setting ," she suggested. "Fill it with a thick layer of green moss, and then put some apples on top of the moss, or some little white gourds. Arrange some tealights in there too, and if you're feeling adventurous, you can always add in some little succulents." (Sounds lovely, I thought, and not too time consuming!)

"Or", she suggested ,"for a more traditional look, you can lay a centrepiece of gourds and corn down the middle of the table. Try nesting three small arrangements of flowers among the gourds and corn (oranges, yellows and reds are nice), and adding in some little terracotta pots, tealights, and succulents, for a full effect." (OK, that's manageable, too, I thought. I'll have to get the corn and gourds, but that's doable -- just requires a bit of organization.)

So, now I'm prepared, and I hope you're inspired! And, for those who have'nt been before, Bloomfields Flowers is at 101 Fourth Avenue in the Glebe, Ottawa. It's a heaven of a place, full of flowers, the most beautiful, unique arrangements, and lovely hand lotions and accessories. If inspiration hasn't hit before you go, I'm sure you'll be feeling the total opposite when you leave! Enjoy, and good luck with your table setting! Picture hanging 101

I often get asked where pictures should be hung. Here are a few tips to help if you're feeling stuck:

Rule #1: Never just start hanging pictures or photos up. If you're hanging one above a table, make sure you really like it there by leaning it against the wall for a while. Similarly, if you're thinking of hanging a grouping of pictures, trace the frames on newsprint, cut them out, and stick them on the wall so you're sure of the layout -- BEFORE you put nails in the wall! Then, you can measure down from the top of the newsprint to where you want the hook, and poke a hole through the paper to mark the spot on the wall.
Rule #2: Don't mount pictures too high! So often, this is what seems to happen. Frames should be centred about 6"-8" over a sofa or chair, and 8"-10" above a table.
Rule #3: Don't hang something too small above a sofa or any other large item! Proportion is really important. For example, if you're hanging above a sofa or buffet, hang one large piece or two or three smaller pieces arranged horizontally. The same rules apply for mantles: either hang one large frame or two smaller frames side-by-side.
And finally, Rule #4, don't feel all your walls need something on them. It's possible they don't, and besides, you want to have something you really love on your walls. Don't feel rushed into hanging just anything!

My first post is all about FoundDesign, because honestly, if you haven't found this Ottawa South store yet, you've got to go and visit Mike and Malcolm at 1192 Bank. It's one cool place, full of all sorts of mid-twentieth century vintage modern furniture -- like Hermann Miller and Danish rosewood --, prints, pottery, glass, and the funkiest lighting you've ever seen. Here are a few shots I took on my most recent visit. You'll see what I mean about the lighting: the funky coloured pendants are actually made of acrylic and fibreglass, and come from some long-gone, probably very smoky, Montreal nightclub of the 1960's. The beech chair -- by Arne Jacobsen for Fritz Hansen (1952) -- is called an "Ant" chair because -- get this -- if you were to flatten it out, it would look like an ant's body. Anyways, here's some ultracool shots of what FoundDesign http://www.founddesign.ca/ has in store for you. BTW, FoundDesign also does rentals for photo shoots and will source an item for you if it's reasonably available. Have fun!
